Contemplation

I created this page in memory of my grandmother and her coming to the US, theme used from Bob Dylan's song Shelter from the Storm.  ---pac 2011

Today is the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of WW1.  Why I should bother mentioning this is first, I love history and secondly, it had direct impact on my grandmother and she meant the world to me. More stirring, there are many persons who would not have been born, including me, had she not taken that lonely journey across the pond.

It was during this time, the battles between the German and Russian forces, that my maternal grandmother's family was annihilated by Russian forces. My grandmother, age 20 and alone in NYC for only 9 months, received a letter from the parish priest that her entire family, mother, 2 sisters, 1 brother-in-law, who were to follow her shortly, were found slaughtered in their wagon, in the forest not far from home. As an aside, my grandmother happened to come to the US because a cousin of hers had applied for an immigration visa 2 years prior, and while waiting, fell in love and decided to stay in Poland with his new love. The transferable visa was offered to family members and my grandmother grabbed at it in fervor, always with beautiful dreams swimming in her head...

"In the first five months alone, German troops marched from the eastern border to the outskirts of Warsaw and back on two occasions. One Polish exile later estimated that more than half of Poland had been devastated by the armies that moved back and forth across its terrain."

"It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."  ~Albert Einstein
