The smell of Fall in the air triggers anticipation of my Circus Moon's arrival. Since very early childhood, it was always sometime in the Fall that my Circus Moon appeared, unpredictably. As a child, the sight always filled me with such glee and I devoured the vision for countless minutes, as time seemed to disappear. It was always best seen in the east sky as we drove south on the road toward my grandmother's house. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned that what I was actually seeing was the Harvest Moon, or the moon nearest the autumnal equinox. The reason I called it my "Circus Moon" is that it I thought the clouds that passed in front of it at times looked like a circus train. I fancied it full of circus animals and circus people all on their way somewhere, though it's destination was unimportant. And it was "mine" because no one with whom I ever shared my moon seemed to enjoy it as much as I.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the 2014 autumnal equinox comes on September 23, so the September full moon counts as the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon and we can see this on Monday, September 8, at 9:38 p.m. EDT. Here's a link for more information:

I loved the story of your circus moon, and your art is lovely as well. What a vivid imagination you had as a child. I well remember the harvest moons of my childhood too. They seem entangled with hayrides, weiner roasts, pumpkins, and the smell of burning leaves! It's my favorite time of year.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding piece, Pam, love your story too!
